I left this on your blog as well, but it maybe makes sense to talk about it here because it impacts our decisions about the Book Database vs the UBB plugins (or using both). I added the Book Database to my blog by transferring to a new host (which has caused me a whole shit ton of problems that I’m trying to resolve, btw, but that’s another issue). I tried to write my first review today on a book that I added to my database.
Your reviews are always so nice on your blog, with hot links to authors, etc. Does that information import to your post automatically with the Book Database function or are you doing something to make it happen? Because even though I have linked my review with the book in the database, it isn’t bringing over the cover image/author/etc. at the top of the post, which is what I expected to happen. I’m annoyed and frustrated.
This annoys and frustrated me too at first – short answer it’s not as automatic as she makes it sound.
(Images in comments is about to be very handy…)
When you edit your post, and you’ve linked your book review, look for the shortcode, and copy that, then paste it into your post (I always post it at the top, but you can paste it anywhere, I think.
That came in too small, but if you click on it, it’ll load in a new window.
Thank you so much! That was so easy and I would literally have never figured it out!
Now my problem is that when I click on any of the live links, you get a 404 error and I don’t know why. I’m obviously doing something wrong, but I don’t know what.
Hmm… Not sure what that’s about. Give me a for example and I can test it on my site. Could it be something not filled in on the book record?
I don’t know – the record seems complete to me.
here is the link to the post:

So you can see what happens when you click on any of the links.
It’s obviously operator error, but I don’t know what I did. I’m really having a hard time with this migration – my Jetpack is all fucked up and is giving me error messages, I haven’t been able to connect to my wordpress account, and nothing is working the way it is supposed to. I don’t know why it’s being so finicky for me. I’ve had to put in endless support tickets, and I’m sure that Ashley is wishing that I’d never signed up for her service.
Anyway, I also put in a support ticket for the database issue, but it’s totally weird. I just can’t figure out the problem and it seems like I did everything right.
I’m betting it’s the page setup bit I posted about below. It’s not intuitive, but you need to create a page then link it to that dialog and from there I think it uses it as a template to ‘build’ the linked data on the fly.
Actually, it might be the setting for setting up a review page. I think that’s what it uses when you click on a linked piece of information.
Screenshot of my setup here:
So, literally, I created a page, named MbD’s Book Reviews and in the body of it, it just has the shortcode: [book-reviews]. Saved that and linked it in the setting dialog above.
I did that, but it didn’t solve my problem. Thanks for the suggestion!
dammit, I thought for sure that would fix it.
Fingers crossed that Ashley is able to get you up and running without too much more aggravation.
I will say that it did create a nice review page on my top menu, though!
