Christine; 10.01.2021 Note: since we are private I am considering using a picture of my actual face here, just for fun.
Today is my 27th wedding anniversary, which gets a woo hoo. I have been married to my husband for almost as long as I wasn’t married to him – I’m 55. Next year this will flip, and I will have been married to him for longer than I was alive before I married him. Crazy, huh?
Anyway, I changed the “header” image, although that’s sort of a dumb name for it, because it’s on the side, not the top. The blurriness of the image I was using was bugging me and I couldn’t figure out how to fix the issue, so I just found something new. It is suitably spooky, I think. Plus, a cat!
I also changed our secondary site identity line to “An International Bookish Community” because I think that describes us quite well!
In addition, I figured something else out last night and now I feel dumb. We don’t really need to give anyone their own category because if you click on the author name at the bottom of the post, it provides a separate feed for only those author posts. We could use categories for organization, rather than to create an author menu if we want to.
Welcome to Themis, Darth & OB, and anyone else who checks in!
Happy anniversary!
Love the new image. Cats are always a good idea …! 😀
Can’t disagree with that!
We could have a few possible headers ready for different times of year, including a seasonal wintry one if we end up here to continue 24 Tasks, and just books for most of the year.
I didn’t even want to bring up 24 Tasks yet; not least because of the format changes we’d been starting to think about last year, and which we then postponed in favor of getting settled (as well as possible) on GR. I’m going to start a separate thread on that in the Game Admin group on GR — we should probably start thinking about that soon, too; not only in terms of game format but also in terms of game location!
I know – I hesitated to bring it up as well, but I figured in for a penny, in for 24 tasks. 😉
Lol. Yeah … 😀
I’ve started a new thread in the Game Admin group.
Happy Anniversary!
I love the new header image. 😀
Happy anniversary! MT came home yesterday and apropos of nothing said “I figured out today that I’ve spent a third of my life with you”. (We’ve been together 15 years this NYE)
As I said in the GR group, I really like the sidebar cat, it looks perfect for Halloween.
And about the categories … whether we keep the user categories or not, I think we need to test whether or not a naming convention for categories would allow us to control the category menus. I’m thinking of when we do different events, like Halloween Bingo and Festive Tasks: if a naming convention allows us to filter the menus on the left, it will be really useful to do that.
I agree.
I was also thinking of categories like travel, cooking, buddy reads, updates to just filter in that specific type of post.
Tags could be more granular maybe, and include things like genres, square/category names; task identifiers, etc. I’m interested to find out what kind of functionality the book database will provide, too. We may be able to use the taxonomies sort of like tagging.
Also, if we decide to do this, I think we are going to set up a set of pages that contains pretty detailed and very basic instructions on how to do specific things: drafting posts; uploading media; creating projects and pages and tracking them; categories and tags; and also a help page where can people can ask questions about whether or not certain things are possible.
Agreed – as I was setting up the architecture, I kept thinking ‘we’re going to need an FAQ at the very least’. Especially for the stuff we’re doing via plug-ins, like image uploading.
I’m going to setup a few test categories so I can see how granular we can get with the menus. I’ll delete whatever I do after I have something to report, to keep things tidy.
I think as usual we’re thinking along similar lines (see my response above). Since you’re planning on deleting yours, I’ll keep my setup in place so everybody has an idea what I’m talking about.
ETA: Whatever else you delete, please don’t delete the main “Halloween Bingo” project type you created because I’m using that one as well!
Absolutely — we do need a FAQ page! Maybe even two; one for how the blog is structured; another one — with two sections, for classic and block editor respectively — for how posting on WP works.
My suggestion on the editors section: let’s do a ‘this is the bare minimum you need to know to post successfully’ for both classic and block, and then offer some advanced topics for those more familiar with WP, and for those who, with time, will get comfortable enough with using it to want to expand their skillset.
I very much agree. We want to help people along but not overwhelm them — and by the same token we also want to be there for those more familiar with WP (either at the outset already or as time progresses).
